Will someone please email to me information about cheap, yet reliable
Internet SLIP/PPP access in New York and Philadelphia? I have colleagues
who lives and works in both cities and would like very much to be able to use
Windows (winsock-based) Internet clients such as Eudora and Mosaic.
Thank you.

BOOTP (Short for "Bootstrap Protocol") is a means by which a network TCP/IP
station can obtain it's IP address when starting up. That is to say, there
needs be no indication of a station's IP address in it's files (system or
config) if it uses bootp.
Bootp was designed to be, at the simplest level possible, a better RARP
(Reverse Address Resolution Protocol). RARP originated to support mostly
UNIX-based diskless stations; for example, X Window Workstations with no hard
drive local to them.
Bootp works basically by a machine sending out a broadcast request to the
network when starting up (or, in trumpet's case when the TCP Stack starts up..
which is not necessarily when the machine starts up ;-) saying "For <my
*ethernet* address> does anyone know My IP address?" (well, it doesn't
actually *say* that, exactly :) At this point, if there is a bootp server on
your network, that server attempts to look up the specified ethernet address
in it's bootptab file (in the case of UN*X). If it finds it, it will in turn
reply that for the specified ethernet address, the IP address is
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX.
Bootp can reportedly go across routers. Unfortunately, I cannot yet get it to
go across *my* routers :( RARP cannot (since RARP is a ?link? layer
protocol)... thus, why bootp is a better beast.
I hope this helps, any additional questions, feel free to ask...

It seems to use a custom encoding scheme, unlike the Unix and Mac
programs which use VAT. I haven't seen anything in the documentation
that specifically describes the encoding method.
IVC buffers up to a minute of audio of one speaker at a time, then
sends it, limiting its usefulness for real-time conversations. The
Unix and Mac programs do it in pseudo-realtime.

Last time I inquired about WSAT, I got a whole load of doubletalk.
1st, they said it was for Winsock implementors, not developers using
winsock. Then, they said that certain tests were "supposed to fail", and
it took an expert to properly interpret the results, and more condes-
cending obfuscation along that line, but still no specifics.

Hi,
I have been using Trumpet winsock for a while and I
can't get the login script to waitfor a "#" prompt and

JSB's Virtual Socket Library has extended the concept of Windows
Sockets beyond Windows to other operating systems.
JSB's Virtual Socket Library provides a way for WinSock
developers to develop on DOS, OS/2, UNIX, NetWare, as well as
Windows platforms. WinSock and non-WinSock TCP/IP stacks,
IPX/SPX and DECnet are all supported through the VSL API. Like
WinSock, the VSL provides a BSD 4.3 sockets-style API.
DOS stacks which are currently supported by the VSL are: 3Com
3+Open TCP, Beame & Whiteside TCP/IP, D-Link TCP/IP for DOS,
Digital PATHWORKS for DOS, FTP PC/TCP, HP ARPA, Locus TCP/IP,
Microsoft LAN Manager TCP/IP, Novell LAN WorkPlace for DOS, Sun
PC-NFS, Ungermann-Bass, Wollongong PathWay Access, and Wollongong
WIN/TCP for DOS.
If you would like a white-paper or programmer's guide, email
martinb@jsbus.com or call me at (408) 438-8300.

Does anyone know if there is a DOS version of WINSOCK available?
